Teresa Bandel-Schott, the new Red Hill Elementary School Principal

Teresa Bandel-Schott, originally from Grand Junction, recently accepted the position as the Red Hill Elementary School (RHES) Principal for the 2008-09 school year. Anthony Barela resigned at the end of the 2007-08 school year after being the RHES Principal for the past two years.

Teresa has spent the last three years as Principal of Shelledy Elementary School in Grand Junction. Prior to serving as Principal, Teresa was the Special Education Coordinator for Mesa County Valley School District, supporting disitrict wide special education services. Teresa has experience as an Assistant Principal for three years at Shelledy Elementary School. Teresa has a Master’s degree in Special Education with a concentration in Early Childhood, a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies and is also currently completing her PhD in Educational Leadership.

“I am really excited to be a part of Eagle County Schools,” says Teresa. “It seems ECS is always ahead of the game and is constantly doing what is right for kids. It takes some of the bigger school districts longer to catch up.” Given that RHES has experienced rapid growth through the past few years and are now at capacity; Teresa believes she fits in perfectly with her three years of experience as a Principal at Shelledy. “It was the only elementary school in Fruita until a year ago, so I have been through quick expansion rate situations of students in the past,” said Teresa.

The new RHES Principal wants to continue the focus on elementary reading and she has had experience with the new reading curriculum, Literacy By Design (LBD), that ECS has recently chosen. For now, she is looking for a place to live while getting ready to make the move from Grand Junction. Teresa is looking forward to spending time camping with her family. Her husband loves to hunt and fish and her two teenage daughters share their parent’s love for the outdoors.

“Teresa’s experience with Response to Intervention (RtI), Positive Behavioral Support (PBS), and working to increase reading achievement has given us confidence that she will provide seamless support for all of the great things already in motion at RHES,” said Heather Eberts, Executive Director of Elementary Education. “We believe her ability to build relationships coupled with her attitude of doing ‘whatever it takes’ for kids makes her a great match for RHES and our district as a whole.”
