How does performance pay work?

by Brooke Skjonsby last modified March 18, 2006 12:57 PM

Eagle County Schools pay teachers based on performance in the classroom and financially rewards top teachers. Teachers who qualify for a performance award are paid a lump sum bonus in the fall.

Depending on state funding for K-12 education, that bonus amount or a portion of it is then added to their salary for the following school year.  The maximum performance award available to each teacher is $2,600.  Here is an example:

A teacher begins the 2005-06 year with a base salary of $40,000 and then earns:

  • $750 through Teacher Skills, Knowledge and Responsibilities evaluation
  • $200 through Schoolwide Achievement
  • $400 through Individual Achievement

This teacher will receive a one-time lump sum bonus of $1,350 in the fall and a $1,350 annual raise.  Assuming Colorado School Finance Act is fully funded, their new annual salary will be $41,350
