Healthy Bites - February 2007

by admin last modified January 23, 2007 08:00 AM

Everyone loves a party, and parties at school seem to have special appeal -- treats, games, ending the school day a little early for some fun -- what's not to like?  Nothing wrong with treats now and then.  So why not make those treats fun to eat as well as great for growing minds and bodies?  Studies clearly show a link between healthy food choices and improved behavior and academic success.  If we're serious about educating kids on the importance of healthy foods, then the message needs to extend to school parties as well.

Parties can include more than just eating.  Many teachers here in Eagle County already do a great job getting kids moving and playing during a party.  Here are a few ideas as well:

Parents -- provide game supplies, pencils, erasers, stickers or other small school supplies instead of food.

Give children extra recess time instead of a class party.  For birthdays, let the birthday child choose and lead an active game for everyone.

Instead of food, purchase a book for the classroom or library in the birthday child's name.  Read it to the class.

Rather than sugar or fat laden foods to share at a party, try some of these items*:

·        Dried fruit

·        Fresh fruit assortment, fruit and cheese kabobs

·        Assorted vegetables and dip

·        Pretzels, popcorn, graham crackers, animal crackers

·        Angel food cake, plain or topped with fruit

·        Bagel slices with peanut butter or jam, fruit or grain muffins

·        Ham, cheese or turkey sandwiches or roll-ups

·        Squeezable yogurts

·        Low-fat chips and salsa

·        Quesadillas

*Check for food allergies before serving
