Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy
Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy
“One doesn't discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time.” ~ Andre Gide
Mission: To provide a rigorous academic program that embraces a flexible schedule for the competitive athlete and non-traditional student.
Vision: Flexibility and high accountability that fosters creativity and academic excellence.
With the above challenge in mind, a partnership and innovative school solution has been proposed. Ski & Snowboard Club Vail and The Vail Ski Academy has continued to attract, grow and produce quality competitors in the region. The opportunity to groom these athletes in partnership with Eagle County Schools has been discussed over the years, yet never fully pursued. In 2004, each of the parties involved requested a more productive relationship be explored. After numerous meetings with Directors and Board Members from the organizations, this partnership is now under way.
Eagle County is home to some of the largest winter resorts in the world. Despite this obvious statement, the valley has struggled to accommodate the needs of some student athletes who wish to explore their talents on the alpine slopes. Because winter training relies on access to terrain, daylight, and flexibility with schedules, the traditional model of school is not flexible enough to accommodate the demanding schedule of highly competitive athletes. In a partnership between ECS curriculum and technology, we began to explore the possibilities for academic delivery without losing the rigor and quality any parent would want for their student. This design meets the social, emotional, academic and athletic needs of the competitive athlete and non-traditional student.
